Jabungu Foundation wants to build a secondary school in Magugu. How, when, for who ? We will explain everything. Jabungu is a non-governmental, non-political an non-profit organisation (NGO) founded in 2021. Its main goal is to promote community development in education, health, youth and women empowerment, environment and sports.
The idea of building a Secondary School in rural Tanzania
Originally, in 2015, the director Agustino Ogutu started by teaching children who had no access to education. Later, he officially took steps to establish and formalise a primary school, of which he is now the manager. It is GreenHill English Medium School in Nkoaranga, which today has about 20 children and 5 different grades.
The idea of building a school in a rural area was on his mind for years, before the project got underway. Agustino wanted to build a primary school near his home town : Babati. It is a very rural area of Tanzania. However, after a needs analysis on the ground, it seemed more important to build a secondary school to give the children a better education. As a teacher, he realised over time that the way other schools were teaching didn’t suit him. More than this, it didn’t allow the children to acquire the skills he wanted to teach them, such as resourcefulness, autonomy or proactivity.
In 2021, in order to achieve this goal, Agustino bought a piece of land in Magugu. Subsequently, was help by partner organisations such as LifeTime Projects, MØN-MERU, Active Human and Architects Without Borders. Jabungu Foundation began to consider the project of setting up a secondary school in Magugu, a rural area of the Manyara region. The school will be built on 24 acres of land. Furthermore, it will be able to accommodate approximately 420 students, from secondary to advanced levels.
Vision and concrete goals of Magugu’s Secondary School
The mission of the Jabungu Foundation is especially to help the youngest people. It wants to excel in education and to provide them with the best knowledge in ethics, environment and social studies, language, science, arts, sports and technology. To achieve this, the scool has to have an environment conducive to learning and development of personality and moral values.
To provide free quality education is very important for Jabungu. It is for that it will equip disadvantaged children from low-income families. By the way, there will have children from middle-income families as well, because they will pay a small fee to make the school sustainable. The rest will be provided by donors.
Evolution of the Project and story with LifeTime Projects
When Jabungu Foundation established its partnership with the French association LifeTime Projects, large-scale projects were conceived, such as the construction of this secondary school. The association has invested a lot of time with Jabungu to find funds for the project. Furthermore, the french association helped Jabungu to develop actions related to education, environment, health and youth & women empowerment.
Today, is it necessary to have a lot of founds. More than €200,000 has been raised for the construction of the secondary school in Magugu. These grants come mainly from private donors and some public donors. However, the project is not finished. The beginning of the construction has to start in 2023-2024, depending on the funds received.
